Chrome Delete & Black Out : Front lower Skirting

Cost: None (I had left-over supplies)
Time: Close to 2 hours (Excluding drying time)

Image

This concludes my blackout journey.

Planning to leave the rest of the shiny bits as is. Incidentally this was exactly I did to one of my older vehicle.

The lighter background makes the black vehicle stand-out.

I‘ll let you do the hard work on that one, and then quite possibly copy what you’ve done. 😉

Zero flat tyres for us, but now that I’ve said that…..

I have a donut mounted on my HEV. I also have a spare 235 width tire sitting in my garage. I got it for under $100 through utires.com, and it is reconditioned.

Inevitably when a tire shop says a tire cannot be patched I'll just have them swap on the used tire and be on my way. Anyone else would be stuck for a couple days getting a new or used tire in.

Speaking of spare tires...lets say you have 30k on the tires and get a flat. Putting a spare on that is a brand new tire or a donut will cause problems, right? Don't the tires need to be within 1/4 or less tread wise?

Purpose of the spare tire will be just get us out of a sticky situation. So under slow speeds, it will do just fine. Better than waiting for a tow truck, at a location without any cell reception.

It will, for sure, put pressure on the AWD system, on the long run. But I would not wait for so long, to switch back to the matching set.

I have a 2023 AWD Calligraphy and bought a donut, jack, and tire carrier to hang the tire in the place under the car. I haven’t needed it, but it’s there if I need it. I haven’t used the stupid “tire mobility kit” although I might use the compressor to add air to the donut. I figure given a choice between sitting on the side of the road or using the donut and possibly stressing the AWD system it’s a no brainer.

On a similar note the wife has run flat tires on her car that came with it. She picked up a nail so I took it to the tire store to have it patched. Nope, run flat tires cannot be patched. I ended up buying 4 new regular tires even though the old run flat tires were only 30-40% worn. And the car has a donut. Go figure. I will never ever have another run flat tire.

Accessory : Spare Wheel Hoist
Cost - 50$
Installation time : 30 mins

Couldn't resist buying one, when I saw a good deal on Amazon.

Ran into installation issues. I could only fit 5 out of 6 bolts. 80% sure it's the product issue. 10% may be due to the fact that I have a hitch installed beforehand, made fixing the hoist difficult, and 10% chances, it may be due to the heavy loads I was carrying behind the vehicle, and that has moved the frame.

With some brute force, I could have force fitted all bolts, but I didn't wanted to do it. That said, the load bearing part of it is secure and I don't see any issues mounting a spare tire there.

So if someone wants to do this, do it before installing the hitch. Makes it a lot simpler to do.

More importantly, I'm left with ~28 inches to mount a spare wheel, with my setup (curt hitch+ AWD hybrid). Full size tire is at 29.2 inch diameter. So a donut looks better for me. Else I need the spare to be deflated, to be mounted in the available space.

DIY: Cabin air filter
Cost: 7$ per filter
Time: 5 mins

I missed it completely, to do this replacement earlier. I was under impression it gets replaced along with the complimentary service. For such a small item, every manufacturer should have added it as part of the regular service (and not charge us 100$ for it).

Thank you, been so long since I installed an interior myself I was getting frustrated because I skipped a step.

Couldn't agree more. New ones look like the older Ford Flex...UGLY
Agreed. Hence why I just bought a '23 after trading in my '20. I love all the options of the Santa Fe but do not like the look of the '24/'25's. I thought a Genesis but they don't have everything the Santa Fe does. Thought about other makes/models but was trying to stay away from the CVT transmission made it hard.

The usual advice is that you should only put a new tire on if the difference between the thread of the existing ones and the new one is minimal.

More info here.

From the owners manual regarding the same subject.

--------------
When replacing tires (or wheels), it is recommended to replace the two front or two rear tires (or wheels) as a pair. Replacing just one tire can seriously affect your vehicle’s handling.
------------
The original tire should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible to avoid failure of the spare and loss of vehicle control resulting in an accident. The compact spare tire is for emergency use only. Do not operate your vehicle over 50 mph (80 km/h) when using the compact spare tire.
-------------

Unfortunately no numeric value mentioned regarding, what is considered as a significant difference in thread depth.

Also no mention of how long you can drive with the donut spare. My guess is, as short as possible/needed.
