2023 Santa Fe preferred w/trend. 3 mos old battery dead

I’m chronicling my ongoing experience for anyone’s interest.

2023 Santa Fe preferred w/trend bought Feb 19, 2023. Manufactured in Jan 2023. The ISG worked inconsistently; just 3 times since I got the car. No sub 7 degrees Celsius temperatures so it should have worked consistently. Also the “battery discharging due to external electrical devices” message displayed consistently.

a Dashcam is hardwired with a low voltage switch and is set to 12.4 volts. (The Dashcam will turn off if the voltage drops below 12.4 volts)

a solar battery maintainer has been connected when the car is not in use. The car may sit for 2 - 3 days at a time and the solar battery maintainer is there because the Dashcam is in parking mode. The solar panel has over voltage protection and reverse flow protection.

On May 5 I get into the car after it sat for two sunny days (solar panel connected) and “tick tick tick” goes the starter. Dashboard is fully on.

A jump start ensues. Drive around for 25 ish minutes. Turn off. Have to jump start again. Yes broken battery. Drive down to dealership and they put a load tester on it and not enough power to make the load tester work. Oh yes….I have to jump start the car again because dealership has no place to store the vehicle until May 9 when they can get it in. At least it’s not a weeks long wait to get diagnosed.

next day at home I put a multimeter to the battery.

over 13 volts but car still exhibits dead battery tick tick tick when trying to start. Multimeter quickly dies To 3 volts….but get this….begins to climb back up to 20 volts then cycles back down to 3 volts. This is over a 4 minute period.

so obviously a flawed battery. I’ve had batteries die before but once they are dead they are dead. Never have I had a 4 month old battery go hysterical like this. I drove it the day before it would not start. It was fine and the Dashcam worked in parking mode. Remember that the Dashcam will shut off when there is less than 12 volts present. So the battery committed “battery-cide” overnight or the Dashcam draws so little power that the battery is able to maintain 12 volts until a much bigger draw happens like trying to start the car. Probably a combination of both.

I will post an update once the techs look at it.

Update. Supposedly a faulty battery. Fixed now but this is the first brand new car battery failure that I have ever experienced.

I was wondering if there was too much draw from the added dashcam....does the dash cam draw when the car is off?

the Dashcam only draws a very small amount of power when in parking or time lapse mode however my install kit has a cut off switch that I’ve set to 12.4 volts. If the battery drops below 12.4 volts the Dashcam shuts off.

the car battery failed in its cranking power. It would operate at full voltage until you tried to start the car.

Can you please share which install kit you have? I’d like to have my camera operating in my apartment garage. We have had a few break ins.
A similar experience. I had a 10 month old Tucson (2.5 gasser). On the colder day of the year in Northeast Ohio, I went to start the the car. Nothing. The battery was dead as a door nail. I called the dealer, who couldn help, but referred me to Hyundai 24/7. Within an hour, they had a roadside assistance car come out and jump us. He stated the battery had a bad cell and probably wouldn’t restart. Due to it being the weekend, we had him replace the battery and worked with Hyundai Consumer Affairs to reimburse us for the replacement. I don’t know if electrical usage ( heated steering, seat heaters & other electronics) caused the excessive drain or not. It didn’t help that most of our trips are local and less than 5 mile trips. The problems do seem rare, but if it occurs, Hyundai does make good on it. Just be persistent and keep detailed notes when talking with them!
With so many short trips, you need to keep your batteries connected to a smart charger. It's not the fault of the battery or Hyundai at all; less than 5 miles is not enough to recharge the battery, so you just kept depleting it, until it crapped out. That's what I do, since we don't drive often, and also most of our trips are less than 5 miles too. I use an Optimate6, by the way.

Look online at blackboxmycar.com
Toss that dashcam in the trash. is it from China?
Ha Ha they are all made in China
I don’t believe that theory at all about the battery. My wife drives only 1 mile to work each day and I’m sure her battery has lasted over 5 years. (Make of car doesn’t matter)

You might just have a defective battery. Unless you have the charging system checked out and they find a fault there. It’s very possible.

There should never be a case to trickle charge a battery daily unless you are doing long time storage.
" preferred w/trend "

What does this/that mean?
It’s the Canadian model designation. Kinda like SEL premium but there are differences.

Correct. Canadian model designations are like this:

1. Essential (base but now discontinued)
2. Preferred
3. Preferred with Trend package
4. Urban (same as XRT)
5. Luxury Hybrid ( hybrid or plug in)
6. Calligraphy

all but calligraphy, packaging in Canada differs a fair bit from US models. In the US, for example, you have multiple trims for hybrid and Phev models…where as here you are limited to only one trim for either with the exact same feature set but slightly different powertrains. However the top limited hybrid in the US does have a couple options Canadian vehicles dont get, but the same is true here too. The Luxury model here kinda sits between the Sel and the limited..but closer to limited. It really is strange how Hyundai packages the cars differently between the different countries.
